Rob Hubbard

Born in Britain around 1955, Rob Hubbard was a trained musician and music teacher who, in the early 1980s, taught himself programming so he could make the fledgling Commodore 64 do what no one else had managed: sound like a real band.

The C64's SID chip offered only three sound channels, but Hubbard treated it as a puzzle to be cracked. He wrote his own interrupt-driven playback routines that updated the chip hundreds of times a second, layering rapid arpeggios, pseudo-echo, and channel-sharing tricks to conjure the illusion of many more voices than the hardware technically possessed. The result was music of unprecedented richness for a home computer, and it made him the most famous name in 8-bit audio.

Between 1985 and 1989 he wrote or converted music for more than seventy games, and titles like Monty on the Run, Commando, International Karate, Delta, Sanxion, and Thing on a Spring became legendary as much for their soundtracks as their gameplay. His driving, rock-and-funk-inflected compositions, with their memorable basslines and virtuoso runs, were among the first game music that players sought out to listen to on its own, and they turned him into an idol of the burgeoning European computer scene.

He later moved to the United States and spent many years as an audio technical director at a major game publisher, shaping sound tools and mentoring rather than writing the chip-level miracles of his youth. Notoriously private, he has never publicly confirmed his exact birth date.

Hubbard's influence is difficult to overstate: he essentially invented the role of the celebrity game composer, demonstrated that severe technical limits could produce genuine artistry, and inspired countless musicians and coders in the demoscene. His SID masterpieces are still performed by orchestras and revered as foundational works of the medium.
