John Vernon

John Vernon was a Canadian actor with a strong stage background who became known for his portrayals of cunning villains, corrupt officials, and cruel authority figures in American film and television from the 1960s onward. He worked with notable directors such as Alfred Hitchcock in *Topaz* (1969), George Cukor in *Justine* (1969), Don Siegel in *Dirty Harry* (1971), and Clint Eastwood in *The Outlaw Josey Wales* (1976). After studying at London's Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and performing in Canadian theatre and television, Vernon made his U.S. film debut in John Boorman's *Point Blank* (1967), playing a loyal friend who betrays Lee Marvin. He later portrayed an ineffective San Francisco mayor in *Dirty Harry* (1971). Vernon is perhaps best known for his role as the sinister Dean Vernon Wormer in John Landis' *National Lampoon's Animal House* (1978), a character he later reprised in the TV spin-off *Delta House* (1979). This role led to more comedic film parts, including Mr. Big in the blaxploitation parody *I'm Gonna Git You Sucka* (1988).
