    Biography

Gabe Newell dropped out of Harvard to join a young Microsoft in the early 1980s, and spent more than a decade there helping ship early versions of Windows, work he later credited with teaching him how software reaches millions of people. Wealthy and restless, he left in 1996, convinced that games were where computing was heading, and co-founded Valve with a fellow Microsoft veteran.

Valve's debut, Half-Life, rewired expectations for the first-person shooter. Instead of disconnected levels, it delivered a continuous, scripted world where story unfolded through the player's own eyes without cutscenes, anchored by an ordinary scientist protagonist and a physics-savvy sense of place. Its sequel pushed further with breakthrough physics-based puzzles and gunplay, and the studio's culture of polish produced a run of genre-defining work, including the community-born team shooter that grew into a global competitive staple, and later a pair of physics puzzle games celebrated for their wit.

Newell's most far-reaching move, though, wasn't a game. Frustrated by the difficulty of patching online titles, Valve built a distribution and update platform that Newell championed against heavy internal skepticism. It became the dominant marketplace for PC games worldwide, transforming how titles are sold, updated, discounted, and discovered, and turning Valve into one of the most valuable private companies in the industry. He later pushed the same logic into hardware, backing VR headsets and a handheld PC meant to free gaming from any single storefront's control.

As a leader, Newell is known for a famously flat, self-directed company structure with no traditional bosses, and for a plainspoken, community-facing persona that made him a folk figure among players. His legacy is dual: he helped mature the shooter into a storytelling medium, and he built the commercial and technical infrastructure that carried PC gaming into the digital age. Few people have shaped both what games are and how we actually get them as decisively as he has.
