The Xbox was Microsoft's answer to a threat it saw coming from Sony. Fearing that a DVD-playing, internet-connected PlayStation 2 could become a Trojan horse into the living room and undercut the PC, Microsoft assembled a team to build its own console and backed it with the deep pockets of the world's largest software company.

Released in 2001, the Xbox was essentially a personal computer repurposed as a game machine: a powerful Intel processor, an Nvidia graphics chip, and, crucially, a built-in hard drive, the first console to ship with one as standard. That storage allowed saved games without memory cards, custom soundtracks, and downloadable content, and the machine's raw horsepower outclassed its rivals, producing the sharpest visuals of the generation.

But the Xbox is remembered above all for one game and one service. Halo: Combat Evolved was a system-selling phenomenon that finally made the first-person shooter work beautifully with a controller and became the console's cultural anchor. Then in 2002 came Xbox Live, a unified, subscription-based online service with voice chat, friends lists, and matchmaking. It was a watershed, transforming online console play from the Dreamcast's promising experiment into a polished, mainstream institution.

Commercially the Xbox lost heavily to the PS2 and sold around 24 million units, hemorrhaging money on every console sold. In Japan it was a near-total failure. Yet Microsoft treated the losses as the price of admission, and the strategy worked: the Xbox established a durable beachhead and a loyal Western audience.

Its legacy is structural. The Xbox proved that a newcomer with enough capital and vision could crash the console party, and Xbox Live built the online infrastructure that every modern console now imitates. More than any single machine of its era, it set the template for the connected, service-driven console business that followed, and it launched a brand that endures to this day.
