Sega Model 1

The Sega Model 1 was a machine ahead of its moment. Developed by Sega's AM2 team with military-simulation expertise from partners including GE Aerospace, it arrived in 1992 built to do something the arcade had barely attempted: render real-time 3D polygons at speed. Its polygons were flat-shaded and untextured, all clean geometric surfaces and bold colors, but they moved, and that was revolutionary.

Virtua Racing, its 1992 debut, let players see a racetrack rendered as genuine 3D space, complete with a switchable camera that felt like science fiction, and its multi-cabinet link play turned it into an event. Then in 1993 came Virtua Fighter, the game that changed everything. It took the fighting genre, still ruled by the sprites of Street Fighter II, and rebuilt it in three dimensions, giving characters weight, footswork, and a sense of physical space. It was less flashy than what followed but conceptually seismic, and it launched a franchise and a whole subgenre.

As hardware the Model 1 was raw and expensive, its abstract angular look a product of doing 3D before texture mapping was feasible in real time. Yet that starkness gave its games a strange purity; the geometry itself was the spectacle. It was a proof of concept fielded at commercial scale, and it worked.

The Model 1's commercial run was short, quickly overtaken by its own far more capable successor, but its importance dwarfs its sales figures. It established Sega as the leader of the coming 3D revolution, it gave AM2 the confidence and the toolset to iterate rapidly, and it produced Virtua Fighter, one of the most historically pivotal games ever made. Every polygonal fighter and 3D racer that followed owes a debt to this brief, boxy, brilliant machine that showed the industry where it was going next.
