Sony approached the PlayStation 5 from a position of strength, carrying the enormous goodwill and audience the PS4 had built. The design goals were speed and sensation. The other headline was the DualSense controller. More than the raw graphical leap, this tactile feedback became the PS5's signature, a genuinely new layer of immersion praised across the industry.

The launch, in November 2020, was defined by scarcity. A global semiconductor shortage and pandemic-strained supply chains made the console nearly impossible to buy for well over a year, with stock vanishing to scalpers within minutes. Demand vastly outstripped supply, and despite that, the PS5 sold rapidly whenever units appeared, going on to move tens of millions of units and outpace its direct competitor.

Sony offered two versions, a standard model with a 4K Blu-ray drive and a cheaper all-digital edition, and later a slimmer revision and the high-end PS5 Pro. Software leaned again on Sony's celebrated studios. Marvel's Spider-Man 2, God of War Ragnarok, Returnal, Demon's Souls, and Astro's Playroom, a charming pack-in built to show off the DualSense, headlined the lineup, alongside multiplatform giants like Elden Ring.

The PS5 solidified Sony's grip on the premium single-player experience and pushed the industry toward instant, load-free design. Its early years were shadowed by the supply crisis and a slow trickle of true next-generation exclusives, but as a piece of hardware it delivered on its promise: a console that changed not just how games looked, but how they felt in your hands.
