Virtual reality had been a punchline for a generation, a 1990s promise of nausea, headaches, and expensive hardware that never delivered, when a teenage tinkerer named Palmer Luckey built a crude prototype and launched it as a crowdfunding campaign in 2012. That project became Oculus, and its dev kits electrified developers who tried them and realized the technology had finally caught up to the dream. Facebook bought the company in 2014 for billions, a stunning bet that virtual reality was the next computing platform, and the consumer Oculus Rift shipped in early 2016.

The Rift was a PC-tethered headset: a pair of high-refresh displays strapped to the face, tracked by external sensors so the virtual world stayed rock-steady as the wearer looked around, later paired with a set of hand controllers that let players reach into the space and grab things. It demanded a powerful gaming PC and a cleared play area, and setting it up was involved, but the experience of genuine presence, of standing inside a game rather than looking at it, was unlike anything a screen could offer.

Crucially, the Rift launched a real ecosystem. Alongside HTC's rival Vive, it seeded the first generation of modern VR games and experiences and gave developers a stable target. Commercially it was a niche and expensive one, held back by high costs, cumbersome setup, and the persistent problem of motion discomfort, but it proved the category was viable and drew serious investment from across the industry.

Oculus retired the Rift line in 2021, folding its energy into standalone headsets that needed no PC at all. But its place in history is secure. The Rift, more than any other single device, ended VR's long winter, transformed a laughed-at idea into a real platform, and set the template, presence, hand tracking, roomscale movement, that every headset since has built upon.
