Released 2018
SNK's quirky mini shaped like a tiny arcade cabinet, complete with its own built-in screen and joystick (2018-present).
About
The Neo Geo Mini was SNK's contribution to the retro-console boom, and it took the most eccentric, endearing form factor of the entire wave. Released in 2018 to mark the fortieth anniversary of SNK, it eschewed the shrunken-home-console template favored by Nintendo and Sony in favor of a miniature arcade cabinet, a chunky little upright roughly the size of a soda can, complete with a built-in 3.5-inch color screen and a tiny embedded joystick, so that it could be played standing on a desk with no other equipment at all.
The choice honored SNK's heritage. The Neo Geo had lived a double life as both an outrageously expensive home console and a ubiquitous arcade board, and it was in arcades that its games truly reigned. The Mini leaned into that identity, bundling 40 games drawn from SNK's celebrated catalog of fighting games and action titles, including entries from the King of Fighters series, Fatal Fury, Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, and The Last Blade, a lineup that read as a love letter to the 1990s arcade fighting scene.
The hardware was undeniably charming, though not without compromise. The little cabinet's screen was pleasant for a quick session but small, and the embedded joystick, while functional, was cramped for the precise inputs SNK's demanding fighters require. The Mini did include ports for external controllers and video output to a television, letting players bypass the toy-sized screen and joystick for serious play, which most eventually did.
SNK released the Mini in several regional and special editions, including Japanese, international, and Christmas variants with differing game lineups, giving collectors reasons to hunt for particular versions. Commercially it was a modest, respectable success rather than a phenomenon, appealing most strongly to the devoted fighting-game community and to fans nostalgic for the arcade era.
Its legacy rests on personality. In a category where most entries chased faithful recreation of a home console, the Neo Geo Mini dared to be a distinctive object, a self-contained little arcade you could hold in one hand. It celebrated the brand's arcade soul rather than its living-room ambitions, and that idiosyncratic spirit is exactly why it is remembered fondly.
