Linux began in 1991 as a hobby project by a Finnish student, Linus Torvalds, and grew into a free, open-source operating system maintained by a worldwide community. It came to dominate servers, supercomputers, and eventually the Android phones in billions of pockets, yet for decades it was an afterthought in gaming. The catch was a chicken-and-egg trap: few games were built for Linux because few gamers used it, and few gamers used it because few games ran on it.

The technical foundations were always sound. Linux was fast, endlessly customizable, and free of licensing fees, and a small but passionate community kept a trickle of native ports and open-source games alive. But mainstream publishers targeted Windows, and the platform's fragmentation, dozens of distributions with differing components, made supporting it a headache few studios accepted.

The turning point came from Valve. Wary of Microsoft's growing control over the Windows software ecosystem, Valve brought its Steam storefront to Linux in 2013 and championed the platform as an insurance policy against a single-vendor future. It launched a Linux-based SteamOS, and, most consequentially, built Proton, a compatibility layer that lets a vast library of Windows games run on Linux with little or no modification. Proton transformed the equation: suddenly Linux users could play thousands of games never officially ported to their system.

That work paid off spectacularly in 2022 when Valve's Steam Deck, a handheld gaming computer running Linux, put the platform into the hands of millions of ordinary players who neither knew nor cared what operating system powered their device. For the first time, Linux gaming became mainstream by stealth. Its legacy is a quiet revolution: an operating system born of idealism and shared labor, long scorned by gamers, now underpins one of the most popular gaming devices in the world and stands as the industry's strongest hedge against any single company controlling how PC games are played.
