The BBC Micro was born of an unusual national project. In the early 1980s the British Broadcasting Corporation wanted a machine to accompany a televised computer literacy campaign, and Acorn Computers won the contract, delivering a robust, expandable computer that shipped in 1981. Endorsement by the broadcaster and adoption by the education system made it ubiquitous in British schools, where a generation first touched a keyboard.
The machine was engineered for quality rather than the bottom price. It was more expensive than the Spectrum, but it was fast, reliable, and packed with well-designed expansion ports and a superb BASIC that made it a favorite for teaching real programming. Its solid construction and clear graphics modes suited its educational mission, but the hardware was also perfectly capable of games.
Its crowning contribution to gaming history is Elite, released in 1984. Written by Cambridge students David Braben and Ian Bell, Elite rendered a vast galaxy of trade, combat, and exploration in wireframe 3D on modest 8-bit hardware, a feat widely regarded as revolutionary. It introduced open-ended, procedurally generated space simulation and influenced decades of games that followed. Beyond Elite, the BBC hosted the maze classic Repton, the platformer Chuckie Egg, and many others, and its arcade-style titles benefited from the machine's speed.
Because its education-first pricing kept it out of many homes, the BBC never matched the Spectrum or Commodore 64 in raw sales or in the size of its games library, but its influence ran deep. Acorn's later work on low-power processor design, undertaken partly to succeed the BBC Micro, led directly to the ARM architecture that now powers virtually every smartphone on Earth.
The BBC Micro was quietly discontinued in the mid-1990s, but its legacy is immense. It taught a nation to program, incubated one of the most important games ever written, and seeded the chip design that would go on to define the mobile computing age.
