Yuzo Koshiro

Yuzo Koshiro was born in Tokyo and showed such early musical talent that he took childhood piano lessons from a future Studio Ghibli film composer. He entered the game industry as a teenager, and by his early twenties he was already a legend among Japanese developers for his fluency with sound hardware.

At the studio Nihon Falcom he scored the influential role-playing series Ys and Dragon Slayer, then delivered a landmark with ActRaiser in 1990, whose grand, symphonic music stunned players who had never heard the Super Famicom's chip sound so orchestral. But his most revolutionary work came on the technically weaker Sega Genesis. For the beat-em-up series Streets of Rage he wrote clubby house, techno, and early electronic dance music, coaxing gritty, danceable basslines and hi-hats out of an FM synthesis chip most composers found harsh, using a custom programming language he built himself to sequence it.

Those soundtracks, years ahead of the culture, are now regarded as foundational documents of both chiptune and video game dance music, sampled and covered by electronic artists decades later. Koshiro treated the sound chip as a synthesizer to be hacked rather than a limitation to be tolerated, and his willingness to hand-program the audio driver gave his music a physicality rare on the hardware.

He went on to co-run his own studio and scored dungeon-crawlers like the long-running Etrian Odyssey series, whose lush melodies proved his range extended well beyond the dance floor. Fans and fellow composers revere him for a combination that is genuinely rare: a formally gifted melodist who is also a self-taught engineer, equally at home writing a soaring orchestral theme or squeezing a warehouse rave out of two megabits.

His Streets of Rage scores in particular remain touchstones, routinely named among the greatest and most forward-looking music ever written for a game.
