Yoko Shimomura

Born in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, Yoko Shimomura trained formally in piano and graduated from the Osaka College of Music, intending to become a piano teacher before a classmate's tip led her to apply to the game maker Capcom in 1988.

Her early years there produced one of the most-played scores in arcade history: the character themes of Street Fighter II in 1991, whose national anthems and fighting-stage grooves became inseparable from the game itself and were heard by tens of millions worldwide. Restless for more melodic range than fighting games allowed, she moved to Square, where she scored the SNES role-playing game Super Mario RPG and the eerie, operatic Parasite Eve, showing a command of both playful and gothic registers.

The defining chapter came in 2002 with Kingdom Hearts, the crossover between Square's role-playing craft and Disney's characters. Shimomura wrote its wistful piano signature "Dearly Beloved" and a vast, emotionally layered score that grew across a sprawling series and turned her into a marquee name whose concerts sell out internationally. She also gave The Legend of Mana its watercolor delicacy and later contributed to Final Fantasy XV, cementing a catalog few composers of any gender or nationality can match.

Her style balances lush orchestral romanticism with an ear for character and place, and she is unusually willing to let melancholy and beauty coexist rather than resolving them. She has spoken candidly about the challenge of building a career as a woman in a male-dominated industry and of finding her own voice apart from the giants who preceded her.

Today she is regularly cited as the most prolific and influential female composer in the medium, a rare figure whose work spans arcade fighters, epic role-playing sagas, and beloved crossover fantasies across more than three decades.
