    Biography

Shinji Mikami is a rare designer who created one genre and then, nearly a decade later, quietly redefined another. Born in 1965, he joined Capcom in 1990 and cut his teeth on licensed and lighthearted titles before being handed a project that would change the medium.

That project was Resident Evil (1996), a PlayStation game set in a monster-infested mansion that combined scarce ammunition, deliberate tank-like controls, tense inventory management, and cinematic camera angles to generate sustained dread. It coined the term 'survival horror' and spawned a franchise that became one of gaming's biggest. Mikami spent the next years shepherding the series and producing an eclectic run of Capcom titles, including the stylish Devil May Cry, the comic-book Viewtiful Joe, and the cult brawler God Hand.

His second masterpiece was Resident Evil 4 (2005). Frustrated with horror conventions, he tore up the formula: a dynamic over-the-shoulder camera, context-sensitive action, and relentless, intelligent enemy encounters. It was so influential that its control scheme and framing became the default grammar for third-person action games for more than a decade.

Mikami's career has been marked by a restless independence and repeated fresh starts. He left Capcom, worked with the studio Platinum's forebears, and eventually founded Tango Gameworks, where he directed the psychological horror game The Evil Within (2014), returning to the genre he had pioneered. He departed Tango in 2023 to seek new creative freedom once more.

What distinguishes Mikami is a designer's obsession with tension and pacing, the precise choreography of fear and relief, resource and reward. He mentored a generation of talent and repeatedly proved willing to abandon a successful template in search of a better one. Whether inventing survival horror or rebuilding the action game from the camera up, he has shaped how games frighten players and how they put a gun in their hands, an influence felt in nearly every blockbuster that followed.
