    Biography

Rieko Kodama joined Sega in 1984, in the arcade and console boom, and spent nearly four decades helping the company punch above its weight in a genre Japanese rivals were expected to own. Known affectionately by the nickname Phoenix Rie, she began as a pixel artist and character designer before rising to direct and produce some of the most beloved role-playing games ever made outside the giants of the field.

Her breakthrough was Phantasy Star, released in 1987 for the Master System. A sprawling science-fantasy epic with first-person dungeons rendered in smooth animation years ahead of its peers, it was extraordinary for another reason: its hero was Alis, a young woman avenging her brother and leading the fight to topple a tyrant. At a time when the genre's protagonists were almost uniformly male, Kodama's work gave players a heroine with agency and depth, and she continued shaping the series across its acclaimed sequels.

Her artistry reached its fullest expression with Skies of Arcadia in 2000, a sky-pirate adventure of airships and floating continents that she produced and directed. Bright, optimistic, and generous where much of the genre had grown grim, it became a cult classic treasured for its sense of wonder and its warm ensemble. She continued to guide projects including the 7th Dragon series and lent her hand to countless Sega titles over the years.

Kodama's signature was atmosphere and heart: worlds that felt inhabited, characters drawn with empathy, and a consistent willingness to center women in stories built to include everyone. Working largely without fanfare, she became one of the most quietly influential creators in Japanese games and a role model for women entering development.

In 2019 she received the Pioneer Award at the industry's premier developers conference, a rare and deserved spotlight. She died in May 2022 at just fifty-eight, her passing confirmed months later, prompting an outpouring from players who had grown up inside the worlds she built. Her heroines and her horizons endure.
