John Roesch

John Roesch has spent over forty years as a professional Foley Artist. He began his journey as an actor at Radnor Senior High School, where with the guidance of theater arts teacher Brian Morgan, he discovered his passion. He continued his studies at USIU-School of Performing Arts in San Diego as a freshman, exploring various aspects of acting. A friend suggested they collaborate on a film, which he eagerly accepted. The film, *Indian Magik is what you See*, won the San Diego Film Festival in 1972. Inspired by this success, he pursued film directing and was admitted to New York University, where he majored in the School of the Arts Film program and graduated with a BFA in Film. He produced a short film at NYU that earned him a place as a Directing Fellow at the American Film Institute. After his first year at AFI, he ventured into independent filmmaking, working as a runner, location scout, and Assistant Director. A chance opportunity with filmmaker Dessy Markovsky introduced him to Foley work, a field in which he quickly found a natural talent. He began working at the independent post-production facility Gomillion Sound, where his foley partner Joan Rowe, who had helped him get hired, worked alongside him for many years. In the 1980s and early 1990s, he co-founded TAJ Soundworks with partners Tim Sadler, Allan Goodman, and later Ed Bannon. The studio became one of Hollywood’s premier Foley stages, known for its creativity and sound innovation, with Sadler and Bannon pushing technological boundaries. After leaving TAJ, John joined Warner Hollywood with Alyson Moore and MaryJo Lang, later transferring to the Warner Brothers lot Foley Stage. He remained there until 2016, when he joined Skywalker Sound to lead the construction of the "Archive Foley Stage." Drawing on his experience, he designed a new stage pit layout, water tanks, and various surfaces that improved the facility in every aspect. His team at Skywalker included Shelley Roden as his partner and Scott Curtis as the Foley mixer. After many years of success, John decided to retire from active foley work at the end of March 2023. He will continue to work in the industry through Audible Bandwidth Productions, a company he co-founded with Charles Kohlmyer and Chris Hanzlik, which produces programming for cable and VOD networks and offers Foley Stage consultation, design retrofit services, master classes, and prop integration. He is also represented by the Mollie Plotkin Group as a Lead Speaker. A member of Local 700, Motion Picture Sound Editors, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, John brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to his speaking engagements.
