    Biography

    John Newton was an English evangelical Anglican cleric and slavery abolitionist, best known for writing the hymns "Amazing Grace" and "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken." Before his religious conversion, Newton served in the Royal Navy and was involved in the transatlantic slave trade as a ship captain and investor. His experiences included being enslaved himself in West Africa. These events profoundly influenced his later life and work, leading him to become a vocal advocate against slavery.
