    Biography

Jenova Chen grew up in Shanghai and studied computer science before moving to the United States for graduate work in interactive media, where he arrived with an unusual question: could games make players feel something other than power and aggression? His student projects were experiments in that direction, including a hypnotic game about an aquatic organism evolving as it consumed others, built around the idea of adjustable, welcoming difficulty.

With fellow student Kellee Santiago he co-founded thatgamecompany, a studio dedicated to games as emotional and even spiritual experiences. Their early releases refined the thesis: one turned that evolutionary concept into a downloadable hit, and another sent players as a single petal on the wind, gliding across meadows in a serene meditation on nature and renewal. Both rejected the genre's usual vocabulary of scores and threats in favor of mood, beauty, and flow.

The studio's masterpiece arrived in 2012. Journey placed players as a robed figure crossing a vast desert toward a distant mountain, unable to speak, able only to move, glide, and sing a single wordless note. Its quiet revolution was multiplayer: you might encounter another real player along the way, anonymous and unnamed, able to communicate only through that chime and their presence. Many players described forming a bond of startling depth with a stranger they could never message, then losing them to the sand. Set to a sweeping orchestral score, Journey became one of the most acclaimed and awarded games of its era and a touchstone for the argument that games are art.

Chen's guiding belief is that games are too often lonely or hostile, and that their real untapped power is to connect people gently. His later work extended that vision to a free-roaming social world about children of light sharing a luminous sky. His legacy is an entire strain of the medium devoted to tenderness, awe, and human connection, proof that a game can move players to tears without a single line of dialogue or a single enemy to defeat.
