Ian Smith

Ian Douglas Smith was a Rhodesian and Zimbabwean politician and former fighter pilot who served as Prime Minister of Rhodesia from 1964 to 1979. He led the country's white-minority government and unilaterally declared independence from the United Kingdom in November 1965, rejecting British calls for a transition to majority rule. His leadership led to international non-recognition of Rhodesia, United Nations sanctions, and the protracted Rhodesian Bush War. Smith's tenure was defined by resistance to decolonization and efforts to maintain white minority rule in the face of growing internal and external pressure.
