Biography
Hidetaka Miyazaki did not set out to make games. Born in 1974, he studied social sciences, read voraciously as a child (often decoding stories from books above his reading level, filling the gaps with imagination), and worked at the software firm Oracle before playing Ico convinced him, at nearly thirty, to change careers. In 2004 he joined FromSoftware, a mid-sized Tokyo studio then best known for the mecha series Armored Core.
His breakthrough came by seizing a troubled project nobody else wanted. Demon's Souls (2009) was an oppressive, cryptic action RPG built around merciless combat, sparse guidance, permadeath-adjacent consequences, and an online system where players left cryptic messages and haunted one another's worlds. It flopped in early Japanese sales, then became a word-of-mouth phenomenon. Dark Souls (2011) refined the formula into an interlocking, wordlessly told world of interlocking shortcuts and environmental storytelling, and effectively founded a genre now universally called the 'Soulslike.'
Miyazaki's run since is among the most acclaimed in the medium: the gothic, aggressive Bloodborne (2015); the parry-driven Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice (2019); and Elden Ring (2022), an open-world epic co-written with novelist George R. R. Martin that sold in the tens of millions and won Game of the Year honors, followed by its expansion Shadow of the Erdtree. He was promoted to president of FromSoftware in 2014.
His philosophy inverts modern design orthodoxy. Where the industry trends toward accessibility, quest markers, and constant reassurance, Miyazaki insists that hardship is the point: that the ecstasy of overcoming a wall you thought impassable is an emotion games uniquely provide, and that respecting a player means trusting them to struggle. His worlds are melancholy, ruined, and lore-dense, told through item descriptions and ambiguous vistas rather than exposition. He has reshaped how a whole generation of studios thinks about challenge, atmosphere, and the dignity of a player left to find their own way.
