Biography
Hideo Kojima grew up in Osaka on a diet of movies and science fiction, and he has spent his career trying to smuggle the ambitions of cinema into an interactive medium that initially resisted them. He joined Konami in 1986, and the next year delivered Metal Gear on the MSX2 home computer, a game that rejected the era's shoot-everything logic in favor of avoidance, hiding, and outwitting guards. It was, in effect, the birth of the modern stealth genre.
His reputation crystallized in 1998 with Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation, a landmark that fused tense infiltration with lengthy voiced cutscenes, fourth-wall-breaking tricks, and dense geopolitical themes about nuclear deterrence, genetic determinism, and information control. Sequels such as Sons of Liberty and Snake Eater deepened both the mechanics and the philosophy, and made Kojima one of the first game creators whose name sold the product.
In 2015 a bitter, public split with Konami ended a nearly three-decade relationship. Kojima re-founded Kojima Productions as an independent studio and partnered with Sony to make Death Stranding (2019), a divisive, genre-defying game about a courier reconnecting a fractured America, built around traversal, delivery, and asynchronous online connection rather than combat. A sequel followed in 2025.
Kojima's signature is maximalism in service of authorship: A-list actors and directors rendered through cutting-edge performance capture, meandering monologues, sincere sentimentality about human connection, and a relentless magpie appetite for film, music, and books. Critics sometimes accuse him of self-indulgence, and his cutscenes can swallow the play. But few figures have done more to argue that games can carry the intellectual and emotional weight of any other art form, or to prove that a single creative vision can command a global audience. He remains gaming's most recognizable auteur, a designer whose name has become a genre unto itself.
