Grant Kirkhope

Born on July 10, 1962, in Scotland, Grant Kirkhope trained as a trumpet player and spent years in touring rock bands before an unlikely mid-career pivot: in 1995 he joined the British studio Rare with little knowledge of games and taught himself to compose for them, arriving just as the studio entered its most celebrated period.

He made an immediate mark by contributing music to GoldenEye 007 in 1997, the shooter that became a cultural phenomenon and a defining multiplayer experience of the Nintendo 64. But his signature came with Banjo-Kazooie in 1998, where his gift for playful, character-driven melody flourished. He built the game's score around an ingenious dynamic system in which each area's theme seamlessly shifted instrumentation and mood as the player moved between locations, giving the whimsical world a living, responsive musicality that players adored.

Across Donkey Kong 64, Perfect Dark, and the vibrant Viva Pinata, Kirkhope developed a recognizable voice: bright, comic, tuneful, and full of personality, equally comfortable with a jaunty platformer romp and a moody spy theme. His music captured the mischievous, inventive spirit of Rare's output at its peak.

After the studio changed hands he went freelance, and his second act proved just as fruitful. He scored the strategy game Civilization: Beyond Earth, the acclaimed crossover Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, for which he won a prestigious songwriting award, and the spiritual successor Yooka-Laylee, reuniting with old Rare collaborators. He has become a beloved public figure among fans, candid and funny about his craft in interviews and podcasts.

Often under-credited next to the shooters and platformers he helped make classics, Kirkhope is celebrated by those who know game music as a melodist of rare charm, the composer who gave a generation of Nintendo 64 childhoods their unforgettable, hummable soundtrack.
