Ed Logg

Born George Edward Logg in Seattle, he studied mathematics and computer science at UC Berkeley and pursued graduate work at Stanford before joining Atari in the late 1970s. A meticulous, analytically minded designer, Logg became one of the most consistently successful creators of the arcade golden age.

His first major hit was Asteroids (1979), co-developed with Lyle Rains. Using crisp vector graphics, the game let players rotate and thrust a fragile ship through a field of splitting space rocks, its elegant physics and escalating tension making it one of Atari's best-selling coin-ops ever. Logg also contributed to Centipede (1981), the beloved shooter co-created with Dona Bailey, and to its sequel Millipede.

In 1985 he designed Gauntlet, a landmark four-player cooperative dungeon crawler that let friends play together as Warrior, Valkyrie, Wizard, and Elf, dropping quarters to keep their heroes alive. Its simultaneous multiplayer and relentless monster hordes made it a social sensation and an ancestor of countless cooperative action games. He followed with Gauntlet II and kept designing hits into the 1990s, including Wayne Gretzky's 3D Hockey and home versions of the San Francisco Rush racing series.

Logg's signature was rigorous, playtested design. He was known for tuning games through careful observation of how real players behaved, balancing accessibility against lasting challenge. Unassuming and technically deep, he outlasted many peers by adapting through the vector era, the raster era, and the transition to 3D. Across a career spanning some of Atari's most enduring titles, few designers put more classics on the arcade floor, and his work stands as a model of craftsmanship in an industry that was still inventing its own rules.
