Biography
Dean Edwards Smith was an American college basketball coach, best known for his 36-year tenure at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1961 to 1997. During his career, he recorded 879 victories, a record at the time of his retirement and the ninth-highest winning percentage (77.6%) in men's college basketball history. Smith led North Carolina to two national championships and 11 Final Four appearances. Before his coaching career, he played college basketball at the University of Kansas, where he was part of the 1952 national championship team under Hall of Fame coach Phog Allen. Recognized as a "coaching legend" by the Basketball Hall of Fame, his legacy remains a significant part of college basketball history.
