David Wise

Born on September 13, 1967, in England, David Wise joined the British studio Rare in 1985 and served as its sole in-house musician for nearly a decade, quietly scoring dozens of titles including the frantic Battletoads before the work that made his name.

That work was Donkey Kong Country in 1994. Tasked with making the Super Nintendo produce audio richer than its chip seemingly allowed, Wise mastered the console's sample-based sound, coaxing out warm, realistic instrument tones and layered ambient textures that astonished players. Rather than write catchy action tunes, he leaned into mood: the hushed, otherworldly "Aquatic Ambiance," with its echoing synth pads drifting over an underwater level, and the melancholy "Stickerbush Symphony" became landmarks of atmospheric game music, more felt than hummed.

His signature style blended jazz, ambient electronica, and natural, environmental sound design, weaving field-recording-like textures and rhythmic percussion into melodic beds that made a cartoon jungle feel genuinely immersive and even lonely. Across the Donkey Kong Country trilogy he refined this approach into one of the most beloved bodies of work on the console, cited endlessly by later composers as a model for how music can build a world.

Wise remained at Rare until 2009, leaving when he felt the company had drifted from the kind of music that had made him. He set up his own studio and continued freelancing, and in 2013 a call from a studio staffed by former Rare colleagues brought him back to the series he defined, scoring Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in 2014 to widespread acclaim, proving his atmospheric gifts had only deepened.

He is regarded as one of the great craftsmen of the 16-bit era and beyond, a composer who treated technical limitation as an invitation and whose serene, watery soundscapes remain a high-water mark for what game music can evoke.
