David Hunter

David Hunter was a Union general who served during the American Civil War. He gained notability for issuing an unauthorized order in 1862 that emancipated slaves in three Southern states, a move that preceded the more widely recognized Emancipation Proclamation. Hunter later played a key role in the Valley Campaigns of 1864, leading United States troops in a series of important military engagements. After the war, he served as the president of the military commission responsible for trying the conspirators involved in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. His actions and leadership during the war contributed to his lasting historical significance.
