Biography
Colin James Farrell (born 31 May 1976) is an Irish actor who has appeared in a range of blockbuster and independent films since the 2000s. He has received several awards, including three Golden Globe Awards and an Academy Award nomination. In 2020, The Irish Times ranked him as Ireland's fifth-greatest film actor, and in 2023, Time magazine listed him among the 100 most influential people in the world.
Farrell began his acting career on the BBC drama series *Ballykissangel* (1998) and made his film debut in *The War Zone* (1999). His first leading film role was in the war drama *Tigerland* (2000), and he gained wider recognition for his role in Steven Spielberg's science fiction film *Minority Report* (2002). He later appeared in high-profile roles such as Bullseye in *Daredevil* (2003) and Alexander the Great in *Alexander* (2004), as well as in *Miami Vice* (2006) and *Cassandra's Dream* (2007).
Farrell received critical acclaim for his role as a novice hitman in *In Bruges* (2008), a film directed by Martin McDonagh with whom he has frequently collaborated. He continued with a variety of roles in films such as *Horrible Bosses* (2011), *Total Recall* (2012), *Saving Mr. Banks* (2013), *Seven Psychopaths* (2012), *The Lobster* (2015), *The Killing of a Sacred Deer* (2017), *The Beguiled* (2017), *Widows* (2018), *Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them* (2016), and *Dumbo* (2019). He also starred in the second season of HBO's *True Detective* (2015).
In 2022, Farrell portrayed Oz Cobb/Penguin in *The Batman* and in the HBO series *The Penguin* (2024), for which he won a Golden Globe. That same year, he appeared in *After Yang*, *Thirteen Lives*, and McDonagh's *The Banshees of Inisherin*, in which he played a naïve Irishman. For this role, he won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice Film Festival and another Golden Globe, in addition to a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor.
