Clancy Brown

Clancy Brown is a tall, wavy-haired American actor with a deep, resonant voice, known for his versatility in theatre, feature films, television, and animation. Born Clarence J. Brown III in 1959 in Urbana, Ohio, he is the son of Joyce Helen (Eldridge), a concert pianist, conductor, and composer, and Clarence J. "Bud" Brown, Jr., who managed the Brown Publishing Company, a family-owned newspaper founded by Clancy's grandfather, Clarence J. Brown. Clancy's father and grandfather were both Republican congressmen representing the same Ohio district, and he spent much of his childhood near Washington, D.C. He began his career in the Chicago theatre scene before making his feature film debut with a sinister role as a bully in a youth reformatory in *Bad Boys* (1983), where he antagonized Sean Penn. He later played Viktor the Monster in the unconventional Frankenstein-themed film *The Bride* (1985), and delivered one of his standout performances as the evil Kurgan in *Highlander* (1986), a centuries-spanning action film co-starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery.

Brown appeared as a corrupt American soldier in the violent action film *Extreme Prejudice* (1987), a deranged killer in *Shoot to Kill* (1988), and a brutal prison guard in *The Shawshank Redemption* (1994), where his character forms a tentative bond with wrongfully convicted banker Tim Robbins. His vocal talents were frequently sought after, and he contributed to animated series such as *Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm* (1995), *Street Sharks* (1994), *Gargoyles* (1994), and *Superman: The Animated Series* (1996). He also landed notable roles in *Starship Troopers* (1997), where he played a tough drill sergeant, and in the Disney comedy *Flubber* (1997), co-starring Robin Williams.
