Biography
Amy Hennig came to games sideways, out of film. Studying English literature and then film theory in the Bay Area, she took a game job to pay for school and never went back, carrying with her a filmmaker's instinct for pacing, performance, and the shape of a scene.
She learned her craft in the trenches of the 1990s, animating and directing on projects at Electronic Arts and Crystal Dynamics, where she wrote and directed Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. That gothic action game, with its dimension-shifting design and unusually literate, Shakespearean dialogue, marked her out early as a writer who took games seriously as drama.
Her defining work came at Naughty Dog. As creative director and writer of the Uncharted series, beginning in 2007, Hennig fused the globe-trotting spirit of pulp adventure with a level of performance capture, character banter, and set-piece staging that reset expectations for what a mainstream action game could be. Her treasure-hunter Nathan Drake was charming and fallible, defined less by his gunfights than by the easy, needling chemistry of his relationships. The series became a defining PlayStation franchise and a proof point that big-budget games could hold genuine character work without losing their momentum.
Hennig's signature is the marriage of spectacle and intimacy: blockbuster action choreographed with cinematic precision, but always anchored to people who talk like people. She helped normalize the writer and director as central creative voices in triple-A development, and mentored a wave of narrative designers.
After Uncharted she navigated a harder stretch, including a canceled Star Wars project at the shuttered studio Visceral, an experience she has discussed frankly as a lesson in how corporate turbulence can devour years of creative work. Undeterred, she founded her own studio, Skydance New Media, to build narrative-driven games, including an ambitious project set in the Marvel universe.
Repeatedly ranked among the most influential people in the medium, Hennig remains one of gaming's most respected authorial voices, insistent that interactivity and storytelling are partners rather than rivals.
