The Shadow of Yserbius is a 1991 graphical MUD (Multi-User Dungeon) developed by Joe Ybarra of Ybarra Productions and published by Sierra On-Line. It was the first of three graphical MUDs designed for online communities and was followed by two successors. The game and its follow-ups remained online until 1996, when America Online acquired the rights from AT&T for an undisclosed price. However, AOL soon discontinued The Shadow of Yserbius, likely due to its competition with the company's own online role-playing game, Neverwinter Nights.
