Company
Tecmo
The Tehkan-turned-Tecmo studio behind Ninja Gaiden, Dead or Alive, and Tecmo Bowl that merged with Koei (1967-2010).
About
Tecmo began in 1967 as Tehkan, a company originally supplying cleaning equipment before moving into the amusement business with arcade machines and games. Under founder Yoshihito Kakihara it built a foothold in coin-op gaming through the 1970s and early 1980s, and in 1986 it rebranded from Tehkan to Tecmo.
The company made its name with a run of sharp, action-focused games. Its 1987 arcade release Ninja Gaiden — and especially the 1988 NES version — became famous for cinematic cut-scenes and brutal difficulty, establishing a franchise synonymous with hardcore action. Tecmo Bowl, released the same era, was a breakthrough American-football game whose fast, arcade-style play and (in its sequel) real NFL players made it a console sensation and an enduring cult favorite. Tecmo also produced the atmospheric platformer Rygar and the beloved wrestling and sports titles that filled out its catalog.
In the 3D era, Tecmo found new success through developer Tomonobu Itagaki and his Team Ninja studio. Dead or Alive, launched in 1996, became a flagship 3D fighting franchise known for its fluid counter-based combat and its striking presentation. Team Ninja also masterminded a spectacular 2004 reboot of Ninja Gaiden that reintroduced the series to a new generation as a benchmark for punishing, stylish action. The eerie survival-horror series Fatal Frame further broadened Tecmo's range.
By the late 2000s, the mid-size company faced the same consolidation pressures reshaping the industry, along with internal turmoil surrounding the departure of Itagaki. In 2009 Tecmo and the strategy-game specialist Koei formed the joint holding company Tecmo Koei, and in 2010 their operations were fully combined into Koei Tecmo Games, ending Tecmo's run as an independent entity.
Tecmo's franchises live on within Koei Tecmo, with Team Ninja continuing to produce action games and the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series still active. From cleaning supplies to cutting-edge action and fighting games, Tecmo's four-decade journey left a legacy of technically ambitious, uncompromising titles that helped define their genres.
