Team17

The Amiga stalwart that struck gold with the turn-based worm warfare of Worms and reinvented itself as a leading indie-games publisher (1990-present).

About

Team17 was founded in 1990 in Wakefield, England, through the merger of the game developer Team 7 and the software distributor 17-Bit Software, combining development capabilities with a distribution network. In its early years, the company became a key player in the Commodore Amiga scene, producing fast-paced, technically advanced arcade-style games such as the sci-fi shooter Alien Breed, the pinball simulations of Project X and Superfrog, and other titles that earned it a strong reputation on the platform.

The company's direction shifted in 1995 with the release of Worms, a turn-based artillery game featuring teams of comical earthworms engaging in battles with bazookas, grenades, and other explosive weapons across destructible environments. The game's mix of strategy, dark humor, and multiplayer appeal made it a hit, and it became the franchise that defined Team17 for the following decades. Numerous sequels and spin-offs followed, ensuring the worms remained a consistent presence across multiple platforms.

As the traditional retail model declined, Team17 successfully repositioned itself by expanding into publishing, supporting independent developers with funding and distribution expertise. Through this approach, it helped bring to market several successful titles, including the prison-escape game The Escapists and the chaotic co-op cooking game Overcooked, among others.

Today, Team17 operates as a publicly traded company and is one of the leading independent game publishers in the UK. It continues to produce new Worms titles while maintaining a diverse portfolio of published indie games. Its long-term survival is notable: few studios active during the Amiga era have adapted successfully to the shifts toward CDs, digital distribution, and the rise of the indie scene, but Team17 has not only survived but grown, evolving from a small studio into a major player in modern independent publishing.
