Supergiant Games
The small San Francisco team that paired painterly art with a live-narrating voice and rode Bastion all the way to the Game Awards-sweeping triumph of Hades (2009-present).
About
Supergiant Games was founded in 2009 by Amir Rao and Gavin Simon, two friends who left larger studios (Rao had worked at EA on Command & Conquer) to build the kind of small, hand-crafted games they wanted to play. They worked out of Rao's father's house in San Jose, joined by writer Greg Kasavin, a former games journalist, and audio director Darren Korb, whose scores and voice work would become as recognizable as the studio's art.
Their debut, Bastion (2011), announced the studio's signature style: lush hand-painted environments, Korb's "acoustic frontier trip-hop" soundtrack, and a reactive narrator who described the player's every move in real time. It was a critical darling and a commercial success that let the team stay independent. Transistor (2014) followed with a sci-fi noir aesthetic and a hybrid real-time/turn-based combat system, then Pyre (2017), an unusual party-based fantasy sport with branching, loss-tolerant storytelling.
Supergiant's defining triumph came with Hades (2020), a roguelike about the son of the Greek underworld god endlessly trying to escape home. Developed in early access with constant player feedback, it married addictive run-based combat to a novel narrative structure where death advanced the story rather than punishing it. Hades became a phenomenon, winning armfuls of awards and becoming the first video game to win a Hugo Award. Its sequel, Hades II, entered early access in 2024 to enormous acclaim.
Throughout, Supergiant has remained deliberately small, self-funded, and fiercely independent, refusing acquisition and keeping its team in the dozens rather than the hundreds. Its consistency is remarkable: five games across two console generations, each distinct yet unmistakably theirs, each built on the same pillars of striking art, memorable music, sharp writing, and mechanical polish. The studio stands as one of the most respected in the industry and a proof-of-concept that a tiny team, unhurried and self-owned, can repeatedly deliver landmark titles. Supergiant remains active and independent today.
