Company
Rovio Entertainment
The Finnish studio on its 52nd game before a flock of furious birds made it a global brand, a movie, and eventually a Sega acquisition (2003-present).
About
Rovio was founded in 2003 as Relude by Niklas Hed, Jarno Vakevainen, and Kim Dikert, students from Helsinki University of Technology who had won a mobile-game development contest. Renamed Rovio in 2005, the studio spent years as a work-for-hire developer making dozens of mostly forgotten mobile games, reportedly around fifty of them, teetering near collapse as it searched for a hit.
That hit arrived in 2009 with Angry Birds. A physics-based puzzler in which players slingshot cartoon birds at egg-stealing green pigs, it was perfectly suited to the touchscreen of the new iPhone: intuitive, charming, and endlessly replayable. It became one of the most downloaded games of its era, and Rovio moved fast to build an empire around its scowling birds, T-shirts, plush toys, theme-park attractions, cookbooks, a Saturday-morning cartoon, and eventually The Angry Birds Movie in 2016 and its sequel, an unusually successful leap from app to Hollywood franchise.
The company chased that lightning with sequels and spin-offs, Angry Birds Space, Star Wars tie-ins, Angry Birds 2, and non-bird titles, with mixed results, and learned the hard way how difficult it is to follow a once-in-a-decade phenomenon. Overexpansion led to layoffs and a strategic refocus on live mobile games. Rovio went public on the Helsinki stock exchange in 2017.
In 2023 the Japanese giant Sega acquired Rovio for roughly 775 million dollars, drawn by the company's live-operations expertise and its globally recognized brand. Rovio continues to operate from Espoo, Finland, as a Sega subsidiary, still tending the Angry Birds franchise that saved it. Its legacy is a masterclass in intellectual-property building: proof that a single, likeable mobile character could be spun into a merchandising and entertainment empire spanning far beyond the small screen where it hatched.
