Rockstar Games

The provocateurs who turned Grand Theft Auto into the most lucrative and cinematic open worlds in entertainment, endlessly controversial and endlessly imitated (1998-present).

About

Rockstar Games was established in 1998 in New York as a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive, driven by British brothers Sam and Dan Houser along with Terry Donovan, Jamie King, and Gary Foreman. The founders imported a music-industry sensibility, edgy, cool, and marketing-savvy, and attached it to the Grand Theft Auto series, whose rights Take-Two had acquired.

The leap to three dimensions changed the industry. Grand Theft Auto III (2001), developed by the studio's Edinburgh arm (later Rockstar North), delivered a living 3D city players could roam freely, and its blend of freedom, satire, and mayhem made open-world design the dominant blockbuster template. Vice City and San Andreas expanded the formula with period settings and sprawling ambition.

Rockstar courted controversy as a feature, drawing political ire over violence and sexual content, but its craftsmanship kept elevating. It branched into other worlds: the noir shooter Max Payne, the schoolyard satire Bully, the detective drama L.A. Noire, and above all the Western epics Red Dead Redemption (2010) and its acclaimed 2018 prequel, which pushed narrative detail and world simulation to obsessive extremes.

Grand Theft Auto V (2013) became one of the best-selling and most profitable entertainment products ever made, its online mode generating revenue for a decade. That success came amid persistent scrutiny of the studio's demanding "crunch" culture, particularly around Red Dead Redemption 2.

Rockstar's identity has always been the long wait: it releases few games, each a years-long event, prioritizing scale and detail over frequency. The Houser brothers have since largely stepped back, with Dan Houser departing in 2020. Still a Take-Two label and still active, Rockstar operates from a position of extraordinary strength, with the hugely anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI poised to be among the biggest launches in the medium's history.
