ConcernedApe

ConcernedApe is the studio name of Eric Barone, an American developer who created the indie game *Stardew Valley* largely on his own. A recent computer science graduate in 2011, Barone began developing a farming game to teach himself programming and build his portfolio, inspired by the cozy rural life simulations of the *Harvest Moon* series, which he felt had strayed from what he loved about them. What began as a learning project turned into a nearly five-year solo effort.

Barone handled nearly every aspect of the game himself, including programming, pixel art, animation, music, sound effects, and writing. He frequently redrew and rewrote large sections of the game, refusing to compromise on quality, and worked long hours with the support of his partner. *Stardew Valley* cast players as a burned-out office worker who inherits a run-down farm and rebuilds their life in a small town filled with richly written characters, featuring farming, fishing, mining, foraging, romance, and seasonal festivals.

Released in 2016 through the small publisher Chucklefish, which handled business and marketing, *Stardew Valley* was an immediate and massive success, selling tens of millions of copies across nearly every platform. Praised for its warmth, depth, and the fact that it was created entirely by one person, Barone continued to support the game for years with major free content updates, adding new areas, systems, and multiplayer features at no cost to players.

Rather than sell the studio or pursue rapid expansion, Barone reinvested his success into a new solo project, *Haunted Chocolatier*, announced in 2021. ConcernedApe remains active today, centered on Barone's vision and his commitment to personally shaping his games. His career has become a defining example of the solo auteur developer and the impact a single determined individual can have in the industry.
