Codemasters

The Darling brothers' budget-software empire that grew from Dizzy and the pirate Game Genie into the world's premier racing-game specialist, finally acquired by EA (1986-present).

About

Codemasters was founded in 1986 by brothers David and Richard Darling, teenage coding prodigies, with backing from their father Jim, in Warwickshire, England. The company built its early fortune on budget-priced games sold cheaply and in volume, most famously the Dizzy series starring an anthropomorphic egg, plus a torrent of low-cost titles that made the Darlings wealthy while much of the industry chased premium pricing.

Codemasters was never shy about pushing boundaries - it produced the controversial Game Genie cheat cartridge and experimented with multiplayer hardware. But its enduring identity emerged in the racing genre. Micro Machines turned tabletop toy cars into frantic multiplayer classics, and then Colin McRae Rally in 1998, made with the blessing of the Scottish rally legend, established the studio as a specialist in authentic driving simulation.

From that foundation Codemasters built a deep and respected racing catalog: the TOCA and GRID touring-car series, the rally-focused DiRT franchise, and eventually the official Formula 1 games, which it developed for years as the definitive licensed motorsport experience. Away from the track it also created the influential tactical shooter Operation Flashpoint. Through changes of ownership and investment over the decades, the studio maintained its Southam headquarters and its reputation for handling and physics.

In 2021, after a bidding contest, Codemasters was acquired by Electronic Arts for around 1.2 billion dollars, uniting it with EA's own racing ambitions and its Need for Speed brand. The Darling brothers had long since moved on to found other ventures, but the studio they created continues to operate as EA's racing powerhouse, producing the F1 series and other motorsport titles - a rare example of a British budget-software pioneer that reinvented itself into a global genre leader and survived to the present day.
