Bungie

The Chicago upstart that made Halo the reason to own an Xbox, then bet everything on the shared-world shooter Destiny across three corporate owners (1991-present).

About

Bungie was founded in 1991 in Chicago by Alex Seropian and, soon after, programmer Jason Jones. Starting on the Macintosh, the studio built a cult following with the sci-fi shooter series Marathon, praised for its atmosphere and storytelling, and the fantasy real-time tactics series Myth.

The studio's fate changed when Microsoft acquired it in 2000 and made its in-development shooter a launch title for the first Xbox. Halo: Combat Evolved (2001) was a revelation, its intuitive controls, sandbox combat, and vehicle-driven set pieces proving that first-person shooters could thrive on consoles. Halo became Microsoft's system-selling franchise, and Halo 2 (2004) pushed online console multiplayer into the mainstream via Xbox Live, defining an era of competitive play.

After delivering Halo 3 and the beloved spin-off Halo: Reach, Bungie sought independence, spinning out from Microsoft in 2007 while leaving the Halo series in Microsoft's hands. The studio signed a publishing deal with Activision and staked its future on an ambitious new idea.

Destiny (2014) fused the first-person shooter with the loot-driven, persistent structure of an online RPG, creating a shared-world "looter shooter" that players returned to for years. Its rocky launch gave way to a devoted community, and Destiny 2 (2017) expanded the formula into a long-running live service. Bungie eventually parted ways with Activision and self-published, a hard-won assertion of autonomy.

In 2022 Sony acquired Bungie for a substantial sum, promising to keep the studio operationally independent while drawing on its live-service expertise. Subsequent years brought commercial pressure and layoffs as Destiny 2's audience fluctuated and a new project, the reboot of the extraction shooter concept Marathon, moved forward. Still active under Sony, Bungie remains a pioneer of console shooters and online shared-world design, a studio that twice reshaped how millions play together.
