Blizzard Entertainment

The polish-obsessed studio behind Warcraft, StarCraft, Diablo, and World of Warcraft, whose golden reputation was later tarnished by scandal before Microsoft absorbed it (1991-present).

About

Blizzard began in 1991 as Silicon & Synapse, founded by UCLA graduates Michael Morhaime, Allen Adham, and Frank Pearce. After years porting other companies' games, the studio renamed itself Blizzard Entertainment in 1994 and found its identity in meticulously crafted, endlessly replayable games.

Warcraft: Orcs & Humans (1994) established a real-time strategy franchise and a rich fantasy universe. Diablo (1996) turned dungeon-crawling into an addictive click-driven loop and helped popularize online play via Battle.net. StarCraft (1998) became a strategy masterpiece and a national esport in South Korea, its balance and design revered for years. Blizzard's watchword was polish: it shipped when games were ready, not when calendars demanded, and its "easy to learn, hard to master" ethos built ferocious loyalty.

The studio's crowning achievement was World of Warcraft (2004), a massively multiplayer online game that grew to over ten million subscribers and defined the MMO genre for a generation, becoming a genuine mainstream phenomenon. Blizzard followed with hits across genres, the card game Hearthstone, the hero-shooter Overwatch (2016), and long-awaited sequels to Diablo and StarCraft.

Corporate history complicated the fairy tale. Blizzard merged with Activision under Vivendi in 2008 to form Activision Blizzard, and over time the tension between Blizzard's craft culture and its parent's commercial pressures grew visible, with the mobile pivot Diablo Immortal drawing fan backlash. A 2021 lawsuit over workplace harassment and discrimination badly damaged the studio's once-pristine image and prompted leadership departures, including Morhaime, who had already left in 2018.

In 2023 Microsoft completed its enormous acquisition of Activision Blizzard, bringing the studio under Xbox. Still active and still shipping major titles like Diablo IV, Blizzard endures as one of the most influential developers in history, a company whose games shaped strategy, action-RPG, and online play, now working to rebuild trust under new ownership.
