Bizarre Creations

The Liverpool racing specialists behind Project Gotham and the neon arcade gem Geometry Wars, shuttered by Activision at the height of their craft (1994-2011).

About

Bizarre Creations was founded in 1994 in Liverpool, England, by Martyn Chudley, initially under the name Raising Hell Software. The young studio found early work developing for Psygnosis, including the console adaptation of Formula 1, which established its credentials in the demanding racing genre - a specialty that would define its entire history.

Bizarre's reputation grew through a series of acclaimed driving games. Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast introduced an innovative Kudos scoring system that rewarded stylish driving, and this evolved into the celebrated Project Gotham Racing series, which became a flagship franchise for Microsoft's Xbox and Xbox 360, blending photorealistic city circuits with the studio's signature style-over-speed philosophy. Along the way Bizarre created one of the most beloved downloadable games of its era: Geometry Wars, a dazzling twin-stick shooter of neon geometry and escalating chaos that began as a mini-game inside Project Gotham and became a phenomenon in its own right, helping to kickstart the downloadable arcade revival.

The studio's polish and technical skill made it a prized acquisition, and in 2007 Activision purchased Bizarre Creations. Under its new owner the studio broadened beyond pure racing, producing the shooter The Club and, in 2010, the ambitious racing-shooter hybrid Blur, which fused arcade driving with combat power-ups. Blur was well reviewed but launched into a crowded market and failed to meet Activision's commercial expectations.

In a harsh illustration of the risks of major-publisher ownership, Activision moved to close Bizarre Creations, and the studio shut down in 2011 despite its long track record of quality. Many of its staff went on to found or join other British studios, carrying its racing expertise forward. Bizarre is remembered as one of the finest driving-game developers of its generation - a studio whose craftsmanship in both blockbuster racers and a tiny neon shooter left a lasting mark.
